Intro
MSL Leiden has a variety of blacksmithing tools available for it's members. Some tools are on loan (from Jochem and Leon). Others are owned by the space. This page details what tools we have available to us.
This page is a work in progress and does not as yet contain all the blacksmithing tools. We have two whole racks of tools that were donated to the space and are condition unknown. Some need some TLC, some are good to go, but specialist.
Tools
London Pattern Anvil
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
A heavy london pattern anvil with a 25mm hardy hole and a 13mm pritchel hole.
The anvil is on a portable stand, there are two round holes on the side that take a pair of rods to make it easier to move about. There are a pair of wheels on the rear side of the stand, if you carefully lift the front you can wheel the anvil about. Warning, and this may be obvious. HEAVY. Really heavy. Careful on the uneven floor.
Hardy Small Anvil
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
For fine detail work, or for where you want the work piece closer to you. Also useful that the edges of this are sharper than the main anvil, this can be useful for dividing work.
Hardy hole cut off tool
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
Used to cut the work from a longer piece of stock. Try to avoid hitting the cutting edge with the hammer. Cut most of the way through, then bend the work to fatigue it from the stock.
Bending Fork
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
This is a useful tool for bending long pieces. It's a bit too big to fit the hardy hole currently, just needs a few minutes with a grinder to make it fit better.
Hammers
1.2kg Cross peen hammer
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
1.2kg German pattern cross peen hammer.
1.6kg Cross peen hammer

Hammer Eye Tongs
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
Used for forging hammer heads. Handles are a bit bent, could use some TLC.
Hot cut chisel
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
This tool is used much like the cut off hardy above but in reverse. THIS IS NOT AN AXE. It is not designed to be swung. Line it up on the work piece and then strike it with a hammer. To use this effectively you really need 3 hands. Some people clamp the *COLD* end of the work piece between their legs, and then use the hot cut chisel in one hand and hammer in another. But it's usually simpler just to use a 2nd person as a striker.
The handle on this, and the 2 fullers, are very long. This is the length of the handle when we bought them. We can cut them shorter if we feel this is beneficial.
Small fuller
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
This is a fuller with a 10mm diameter curve to it. Used to adding the fuller to blades, as well as for seperating the cutting edge on axes, putting the seperations on hammer heads, etc...
As with the hot cut chisel, this really needs 3 hands to work effectively. Consider asking a fellow maker to act as striker.
Large Fuller
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
As the small fuller, but with a 20mm diameter curved edge.
Misc
Nail Plate
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
Used for forging the head of nails.
IR Thermometer
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
High temperature IR thermometer that can measure upto 1600C. Useful for checking the forge temp, both during use, and to make sure it's cooled down so you don't burn yourself. Do not store with the battery installed.
Farriers' Brush
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
Large steel bristled stiff farriers brush. used to brush the scale off a work piece while it's hot. The design shields the hand from the heat.
Small Steel Brush
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
Small steel brush, used the same as the farriers brush, but with a higher chance of burning your hand if you use it wrong...
Small Brass Brush
Owner: Makerspace Leiden
Small brush brush, Used to instill a brass effect in the surface of the steel.
