Maintenance

See Maintenance Ultimaker 2+

Recommended maintenance schedule

To keep your Ultimaker 2+ in optimal condition we recommend the following maintenance schedule, based on 1,500 printing hours per year:

Every month Every three months Every Year
Clean Printer Check for plays on axels Clean feeder and replace Bowden tube
Lubricate axles Check for tension of short belts
Lubricate lead screw Z moto
Re-tighten hot end isolator

Releasing clocked material in nozzle

  1. Over time filament will block the nozzle. to clean the nozzle follow the following steps:
  2. Remove remaning filament
  3. Get a 30cm of Nylon filament and straighten it as much as possible
  4. Remove the blue horshoe clip underneath the white coupling
  5. Remove the filament tube out of the print head, while holding the white coupling
  6. Select in the main menu Advanced
  7. Select Heatup Nozzle
  8. Raise the nozzle temperature to 260 degrees
  9. Once on right temperature, insert the straightened piece of filament in the nozzle
  10. Set the temperature to 90 degrees and wait for the printer to reach this temperature
  11. Pull out the filament, be aware may require substantial force
  12. Repeat this process as often as required

Applicability

Software

For the design of 3D models, the following software can be used:

  • Open scad - Openscad is a open source software for creating solid 3D Cad objects (available on Wndows, MacOS and Unix/Linux). Openscad is a scripting language
  • Fusion 360 Fusion 360 is an integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software to design 3D models. For personal use it is free of charge (available on Windows, MacOS)

For the printing of the models , the printer needs a .STL file. Any CAD software that is able to convert your design into a STL is suitable for designing for the 3D printers. Alternatives are Sketch and Blender.

The printer needs a NGO file as input. A .STL file can be converted into a GCODE by:

  • Cura Cura is used to slice the model and prepare the GCODE (file extension .NGO). To feed model the GCODE needs to be copied to a SD-card. The SD-card reader is on the front of the 3D printer
  • Slic3r Slic3r is used to slice the model and prepare the GCODE. To feed model the GCODE (file extension .NGO) needs to be copied to a SD-card. The SD-card reader is on the front of the 3D printer
  • PrintRun PrintRun allows direct control of the printer and offer more opportunities than Cura/Slic3r. The GCODE file is uploaded via the USB connection on th ebackside of the printer.

Printing on the Ultimaker 2 + or Ultimaker 2 Extended +

To print a 3D model:

  1. Prepare the GCODE file and copy it to a SD card
    1. Enter the SD card into the SD card reader
    2. Prepare the print table for printing, apply
      1. glue (for PLA) or
      2. painters tape (for ABS)
  2. Switch on Ultimaker on the back side of the machine
  3. Change material:
    1. To change material or the enter material in to the printer, choose Material in the main menu
    2. Choose Change. The machine heats up and first will remove existing material
    3. Choose Ready once material is removed
  4. Feeding new Material
    1. Feed new material on the back side of the UltiMaker
    2. Choose Ready once the material is transported through the tube. The material will be transported to the nozzle.
    3. Wait till material flows through nozzle and confirm by selecting Ready
    4. Return to main menu by selection Return
  5. Print model
    1. Select Print
    2. Choose model you like to print. The printer heats up to the required temperature.
  6. Printing
    1. Once the nozzle and print table are at th erequired temperature, the printer will start.
    2. Printer releases small amount of filament through the nozzle
    3. The printer starts printing
    4. The display shows the expected time for the print
  7. Print ready
    1. Allow the printer table to cool down. Too early removal of the print may damage the print
    2. Remove the print from the print table
    3. Clean the printer table when required (remove glue / painter tape)
    4. Remove the Filament from the printer by executing step 3 of this procedure
    5. Once the filament is removed, switch off the print with the switch on the backside of the printer
    6. Store filament in the appropriate location
