For general information about the Makerspace Leiden check our main website.

This Wiki is for members (or deelnemers). If you want to become a member - then you can find more information here.

We collectively maintain the space, our documentation of tools, processes and what not here on this wiki. Consult the ToDo list if you have some idle time and want to contribute. Contact the members-only mailing list for an account or ask at the Deelnemersraad.

Tools

A list of all the Tools we have documented; or by group:

We have quite a few more tools. These are just not (yet) documented. Ask on the mailing list to arrange for in-situ instructions and help (and it is really appreciated if you help document those things afterwards).

Most tools are owned (donated, bought) by the Stichting Makerspace Leiden; some are on long term loan. Follow these instructions if you want to donate a tool or want a tool we do not yet have.

Report issues, such as broken tools or things which are unsafe, to the mailing lists. Always. No exceptions. Also if you find lost tools.

Safety and Noise

Safety is not optional. Following the Rules and Instructions is mandatory (and generally a good idea if you value your hands/legs/eyes and what not). We have a few machines that will happily rip your arm off or blast your eye out.

Read this list of all tools that have safety instructions at least once. Know that some tools require permission or instruction prior to use. In those cases - just reading the instructions is not enough. You need to have explicit permission from the Space to use these.

Equipment in the highest noise category (1) cannot be used before 07:00 and after 19:00 (these are machines which require ear protection too).

When using one but highest noise category (2) in the evenings - do consider our neighbors. If you need earmuffs - you are probably too loud.

Some machines that require dust or chip control and it is compulsory that you turn it on. For others it is either very important or strongly recommended . The background is either the risk of hot/smoldering chips in the bottom of the machine (e.g. in the Vlakbank) or the risks of dust collecting and becoming a fire/explosion and health risk.

Finally - when dealing with gasses - always observe the limits around pressure vessels and close all valves when not in use/upon leaving. As this is tightly coupled to the environmental ordinance of the City of Leiden - and thus vital for us to be able to operate the makerspace in its current (safe) form.

Procedures and Principles

General principles:

  • Be excellent & try to not be on fire.
  • Always leave the space cleaner than you found it.
  • All tools have a place -- so put tools back.
  • If it is a mess; speak up & clean up. If you find a machine in a mess; clean it or do no use it. If you use it - it becomes your sole responsibility to clean things up. No ifs. No buts.
  • If things run out - replenish them, reorder them or at the very least report it to the mailing lists. Receipts can go into the jar (with your name on it) or to the Hans.

We have some procedures to manage the MakerSpace such as:

and see this page for a complete list.
